Governance

The purpose of governance is to provide confident, strategic leadership and to create robust accountability, oversight and assurance for educational and financial performance. All Governing Boards, have three core functions:

  • Ensure clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;

  • Hold the executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils, and the performance management of staff; and

  • Oversee the financial performance of the organisation and make sure its money is well spent.

Our Governing Body is committed to providing an excellent environment for all pupils to enjoy during their time at our school. We support the Headteacher in ‘achieving the best’ across the whole spectrum of school life, we help set strategic objectives and monitor performance. For this reason the governors’ role is often described as a ‘critical friend’.

As a local authority maintained community school, there are several categories of governor who sit on the Governing Body, appointed by the different groups that have an interest in the school. These are representatives of the Parent and Staff bodies, the Local Authority and the wider community. All Governors have equal status, however they are appointed.

Our Governing Body comprises:

  • 2 Parent Governors

  • 1 Local Authority Governor

  • 1 Headteacher

  • 1 Staff Governor

  • 3 Co-Opted Governors

The Full Governing Body meets half termly, usually on an evening, and we have one permanent committee; Pay and Appraisal, that meets as required.

In addition, governors attend training sessions, seminars and read relevant articles and news bulletins to keep up to date with educational changes. This enables the Governing Body to work effectively. We also go into school to complete specific monitoring visits, meet with the Headteacher, other members of staff and pupils.
