Physical Education
Our School Offer for P.E.
Within the Purpose of Study for Physical Education (PE), ‘A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities…’
What do we mean by P.E?
In Key Stage 2, we aim for all pupils to develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities. We aim for them to be physically active for sustained periods of times and aim that all pupils engage in competitive sports and activities. We also aim for them to lead healthy, active lives.
How do we teach P.E.?
• Pupils participate in 2 x 1 hour lessons per week (1 x Class Teacher and 1 x Inspired PE Coach)
• Teachers have good subject knowledge via termly training and access to additional Yeovil School Games Association training
• Teachers use well founded and ambitious schemes of work (Inspired P.E.) to deliver lessons that are engaging, challenging and develop skills across the curriculum
• Teachers’ planning ensures opportunities for collaboration between pupils, reflection and feedback
• Teachers use repetition to ensure learners secure skills
• Assessment is an integral part of lessons; mini-plenaries are used to ensure progression within a session
• High quality resources and materials support the teaching and learning of pupils (we focus on clear identification & use of the Sport Premium Grant)
• Our Swimming tuition is supported using qualified coaches from local swimming centres
• We promote leadership by the creation of Playground Leaders – our eldest children help run lunchtime physical activities
How do we inspire a love of P.E.?
We believe that opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect. We believe that school can support this by offering daily activities both within and outside of the school day (Lunchtime Activity rota & After-school Club provision) and we can participate within local sporting tournaments with local schools (Yeovil School Games Association (YSGA) membership). There are annual whole school events such as the Santa Dash at Christmas, House tournaments and a ‘Health & Well-Being’ week. Our Monthly SPJS Celebration has an identified section for parents to share the excellence in sporting clubs outside of school. Our Sport & Physical Activity Notice board is a prominent point of contact for all children.
How do we address gaps in pupil’s knowledge and skills in P.E.?
• Lesson plans offer a differentiated progression of activities for staff to modify
• We offer a range of resources to support pupils’ needs
• Clubs reflect a diverse range of entry points, from ‘Fun Club’ to ‘Ballet’ to more traditional sports such as ‘Football’ and ‘Netball’
How do we assess P.E.?
We assess the children’s skill development against the school progression document and pupils are assessed at the end of each half term.
How can Parent/Carers help?
We know that many Parents/carers support their children to be active outside of school; this may range from family outings and adventures to participation at a variety of clubs. We also ask that all Parents/Carers ensure that their child has their PE kit in school; PE is a statutory National Curriculum subject and a change of kit is required to participate.
